Ayurveda & Immune System

We all are very well aware of the importance of our immune system and with recent COVID 19 pandemic, you won’t find a single person who has not thought about improving it. Our immune system works to defend us against hordes of microorganisms and germs that we are exposed to every day.

In majority of the cases, the immune system performs an excellent job of preventing diseases and infections and keep us healthy. However, as we all have learnt that the viruses/germs are ever evolving and so should be our immune system with changing times. There is no doubt that we all must put more and more efforts to improve our immune system. But the big question remains how?

Let us see what’s Ayurveda’s perspective on immunity.

Ayurvedic Concept of Immunity:

At its core, Ayurveda is not about suppressing symptoms, but about addressing the root cause of the problems.

According to Ayurveda, strong immunity is a product of good digestion, strong agni (the metabolic fire), quality liver functioning, and a balanced endocrine system (which includes appropriately balanced hormones).

Immunity as a concept has been explained very widely in Ayurveda under multiple topics. The most important ones are:

  • Ojas – the concept of Supreme resilience: As per Ayurveda, Ojas is the final product of physiological transformation happening in our body as part of tissue nourishment. The seven layers of tissues are nourished one by one as a result of properly functioning metabolic pathways and this process results in “Ojas” which is regarded as a mysterious substance in Ayurveda. The literal meaning of Ojas is “Vigor, vitality and Immunity.”
  • Bala – the concept of strength: Ayurveda greatly emphasise that the ‘Bala’ inherently present in our body is the source of body’s self-repair and self-nourishment capabilities.
  • VyadhiKshamathwa- the concept resistance to illness: Ayurveda provides a lot guidance on assess& improve our body’s‘VyadhiKshamathwa that can be understood asability of the immune system to fight against the disease-causing pathogens.

Our approach to Immunity support:

At ShriAsha – we plan a step by step strategy based on your unique constitution to address the current dynamics in your system to support immunity. We focus on the following aspects to support your immunity:

  • Diet Support – after in-depth consultation, based on your constitution we will list the most suitable dietary dos and don’ts including seasonal diet guide.
  • Balanced Sleep – Sleep is critically important to the immune system. Studies have shown that when animals are completely deprived of sleep, they suffer a total loss of immune function—eventually resulting in death. In humans also, sleep deprivation severely compromises the immunity. We will help you achieving the balanced sleep patterns with calming herbs and breathing techniques.
  • Managing stress- we help you understand Ayurvedic practices on stress management to preserve “Ojas” and bolster your immune system.
  • Herbal Supplements- There are a number of herbs in the Ayurvedic tradition that can support the immune system. These herbs often have an affinity for specific tissues and systems in the body, and, each in their own way, help to encourage proper immune function and optimal health.
